Women in Science and Technology at Ergon

On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Ergon is delighted to celebrate some of the many amazing women throughout our organization who contribute to the fields of science and technology.

ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF WOMEN AND GIRLS IN SCIENCE

In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to establish an annual International Day to recognize the critical role women and girls play in science and technology communities. These efforts are designed to support and promote access and participation for women and girls in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, training and research activities.

According to UN statistics, less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women, and only 30% of female students select STEM-related fields in higher education. The UN reports that only 5% of female students globally choose to study natural science, mathematics and statistics, and 8% choose the fields of engineering, manufacturing or construction. These are all areas with opportunities for employment in organizations like Ergon, and it is our hope that you will join us in supporting and celebrating the women and girls who are leading innovation.

Ergon COO Statement on United States Court of Appeals Decision in Ergon v EPA

JACKSON, MS – Kris Patrick, Chief Operating Officer of Ergon Inc., issued the following statement on the United States Court of Appeals’ Decision in Ergon – West Virginia Inc. v United States Environmental Protection Agency:

“This is the second time the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit has disagreed with EPA’s decision to deny hardship relief to Ergon – West Virginia Inc. Securing relief is more important now than ever due to the historic downturn in demand for fuel and two-year high RIN prices. This ruling will have long-term impact on jobs and the viability of the local economy, so the court’s decision is very welcome news and urgently needed for Ergon – West Virginia and its employees.”

Background

Congress created the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) as part of the 2005 Energy Policy Act in an effort to reduce dependence on foreign crude and expand the nation’s renewable fuel use. Their understanding of the detrimental impact the program could have on small refineries prompted Congress to direct the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to grant relief to small refineries that would suffer a “disproportionate economic hardship” in complying with the program. Congress intended for hardship relief to prevent small refiners from having to buy RINS instead of putting those funds towards growth and sustainability of operations.

Furthermore, a 2011 study by the Department of Energy (DOE) predicted that this disproportionate economic hardship would occur, and this is precisely what Ergon – West Virginia (EWV) has experienced. Like other small refineries, Ergon operates in rural geographic areas, supplying critical fuel supplies and supporting the local economies with jobs and tax revenue. It is vital that Congress, the EPA and the DOE continue to protect the important role of small refineries in the U.S. economy.

“Ergon has blended ethanol and bio-diesel to the maximum limits that our markets will allow and recognize their value in the market,” Patrick commented. “Hardship relief for Ergon will not reduce Ergon’s blending of biofuels. However, the current EPA position on the RFS standard heavily penalizes Ergon despite our willingness and actual track record of blending bio components to the limitations of the markets that we serve. We support our farmers across the nation. We believe that jobs in the bio-industry are important, and we also believe in the importance of jobs in the small communities where we and other small refineries operate.”

Small refineries are defined as those processing less than 75,000 barrels per day of crude oil, and EWV processes 23,500 barrels per day. Unlike large integrated refineries which primarily produce gasoline, many small refiners produce diesel fuel in higher proportions. All refiners are required to purchase renewable identification numbers (RINS), which the EPA describes as “credits used for compliance and the ‘currency’ of the RFS program.” This mandate has resulted in an artificial, government-created market for blend requirements beyond what the market will accept, primarily due to diesel-to-gasoline production ratio or “diesel disparity.” Fundamentally, this program unfairly disadvantages small refineries, particularly those with higher than average production of diesel. Unlike ethanol’s broad market acceptance at 10% in gasoline, Ergon – West Virginia’s diesel market is more reluctant to the acceptance of biodiesel blends.

EWV blends 10% ethanol with 99% of the gasoline it produces and will continue to do so, even without a mandate. However, the detrimental impact imposed by the RFS on EWV’s high diesel production is unacceptable and counter to the intent of the RFS program.

“Ergon strives to be a strong employer and good steward of the environment, making positive contributions to the communities in which we serve,” Patrick said. “In addition, Ergon has made significant investments in environmentally friendly processes and technologies over the past three decades. The recent Court decision will allow Ergon to continue to invest in our operations and our employees.”

About Ergon – West Virginia, Inc.

Ergon – West Virginia operates one of the smallest refineries in the United States, the only refinery in West Virginia, and is the single largest employer in the rural area in which it operates.

Located in Newell, West Virginia, EWV’s products include paraffinic base oils, paraffinic bright stocks, waxes, petrolatum, petroleum resins, E10 gasoline and ultra low sulfur diesel produced from local Appalachian based crude.

Agencies’ Preservation Treatments Using Ergon Emulsions Win International Awards

Ergon Asphalt & Emulsions (Ergon A&E) is committed to supporting customers with high-quality products to help extend the life of roadways. Through strong partnerships and proven solutions, we work alongside agencies to implement cost-effective treatments to maximize pavement performance and longevity.

Ergon A&E has served as the proud supplier of numerous award-winning Best Chip Seal Projects for the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT). These awards are not only a testament to our commitment to providing quality solutions to ensure customer success, but they also highlight how strategic pavement preservation helps agencies maximize their road budgets to ensure a healthy roadway network. The following are details of the NMDOT’s award-winning strategy to keep their good roads good with chip seal applications.

___________

NMDOT takes a proactive approach to preserve their pavements, ensuring roads remain in top condition while preventing costly repairs down the line.

As part of their standard of Mobility for Everyone, NMDOT has worked to keep a watchful eye on gravel and paved roads for drivers. NMDOT’s maintenance program primarily focuses on secondary and rural roads with lower traffic volumes, where cost-effective solutions make a significant impact. The agency uses HFE-100P, a conventional asphalt emulsion, for chip seal treatments on these roadways. The chip seal process begins with spraying an asphalt emulsion on a pavement surface, followed by a layer of aggregate, effectively sealing and protecting the pavement from raveling and deterioration caused by weather and traffic. This method is compatible with existing state equipment and helps extend road life by five to seven years. By choosing chip seals, NMDOT is saving an estimated $18,000 per lane mile compared to traditional milling and resurfacing. The agency’s ability to maintain road quality while minimizing costs is a key factor in preserving the state’s roadways for years to come.

Best Chip Seal Project Award

To encourage effective pavement preservation, the NMDOT Maintenance Division awards districts with the Best Chip Seal Project designation each year, known as the Chip Seal Quality Awards.

In 2024, NMDOT District 2 won the Chip Seal Quality Award — placing top in their division among other road and transportation districts. Additional award-winning years and districts include:

2020 – 2021: District 4

2022: District 1

2023: District 2

test“Winners receive jackets and, more importantly, the bragging rights of being named the best chip seal crew for that year,” said Ralph Meeks, retired Ergon A&E Area Sales Manager for New Mexico. “It’s a big deal for the state and fosters a sense of pride among the winning crews.”

But this recognition doesn’t happen by chance for the winning districts — it is the result of a careful evaluation process to decide which district truly earns the title.

Evaluation

Every year, the State Materials Director randomly selects routes and roads from each district for evaluation based on criteria such as quality of application, coverage and durability. A panel of 5 to 10 judges, including representatives from multiple districts and the Santa Fe office, each visit selected sites physically to assess and evaluate the projects. An important note — districts cannot evaluate their own roads to ensure fairness during the process.  Also, evaluators are not permitted to discuss scorecard tallies in any capacity.

Evaluation score points are calculated by seven categories: Chip Retention, Appropriate Chip Embedment, Workmanship Centerline Joints, Workmanship Start and Stop Joints, Workmanship General, Appearance and Neatness along with Conservation of Resources.

Application in Action

Since 2019, NMDOT has trusted Ergon A&E to supply asphalt emulsions for their chip seal treatments. For these projects, HFE-100P was applied at a shot rate of 0.35 – 0.45 gallons per square yard, depending on surface conditions and aggregate gradation. Immediately following the emulsion application, an aggregate was applied, followed by multiple passes with pneumatic rollers to promote strong bonding and durability.

Award-winning recognition of these projects across NMDOT districts underscores the effectiveness of Ergon’s solutions and our commitment to helping agencies succeed.
